It’s daffodil season! Did you know that Brincka Cross Gardens has the most varieties of daffodils in Northwest Indiana? This park has 450 varieties of daffodils. The best time to see them is around the end of April when many of the daffodils will be in full bloom. This park is one of the free options available through Porter County Parks and Recreation and is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

Brincka Cross Gardens got its start from Bill Brincka and Basil Cross who spent 40 years developing these picturesque gardens and the unique house on the property. Spring is a wonderful time to see the daffodils, as well as many other blooming trees and plants. Daffodil Hill is gorgeous with so many varieties spread throughout the wooded area. Also in bloom are magnolia trees, forsythia, scilla, buttercups, azaleas, Japanese cherry trees, blood roots, and hellebores.

The rhododendron will be blooming soon along with viburnum and dogwoods. Some ephemerals that you might see include Virginia bluebells, britchman’s breeches, Jack-in-the-pulpit, mayapples, and pink lady’s slippers.

After you spend some time looking at the beautiful plants around the house on the property, stick around and enjoy the trails. Beyond the gardens are 21 acres of woodlands with well-maintained, wide gravel trails. Hiking in the woods is a relaxing way to de-stress during these trying times. The sights, smells, and sounds are soothing for the soul!

A new parking lot is available to the west side of the gardens where the painted green fence is located. From the parking lot, you can follow the trail to the gardens and the woodlands.

Be sure to follow social distancing rules when you visit our parks, such as maintaining six feet of space between you and other visitors. Learn more about Brincka Cross Garden here.
